Jokemaster's Tips
-
Ensure that your joke can be told in the allotted time. You have 1 to 3 minutes so
if it's a long joke then see if it can be shortened. No shaggy dog tales. You will
see the lights at the following intervals:
- 1 minute - Green light
- 2 minutes - Yellow light
- 3 minutes - Red light
-
A jokemaster doesn't have to tell a joke, per se. You can also offer a humorous story,
an amusing personal anecdote or anything else with a humorous bent.
-
Be sensitive to the audience. Although it is common for jokes to be at the expense of
other individuals this is not the attitude that we try to foster at Lodo Toastmasters.
Make sure your jokes are politically correct.
-
You may, however, be the butt of your own joke - this is the only acceptable "roasting."
If you know of a particularly funny joke that makes fun of a religion, ethnic group or race
then try to manipulate that joke so that it makes fun of you. You may find you get better
laughs as nothing is better than a joke from someone who has a sense of humour about
themselves.
-
Lodo Toastmasters is a family show. If you wouldn't tell your four year old son/daughter/nephew/nice
then don't tell it here. Please keep all humour above the waistline.
-
A good comedian never laughs at his own humour. If the joke falls then let it lie. Simply hand the
meeting back to the Toastmaster and learn from the experience.
